Alyssa Cowell | 63 Moons Photography

I want to capture the good stuff, the messy moments, and the dirty details.

My creative process is similar to the way I care for my garden -- getting to know you and your roots is important to me, I like to get dirty, capture the beautifully messy details, and I’ll squash your insecurities like those pesky bugs that like to linger on leaves. Born and raised in San Diego, CA I have been photographing for the last 4 years and let me tell you, it has been a journey. I bought my first camera as a graduation present for myself in 2014 and it sat in my closet collecting dust for quite some time. I never knew what my passion was or what I wanted to do as a career and it wasn’t until friends and family started asking me to take photos that I quickly discovered my love for photography. The only other thing I’m really good at is electric sliding to any song imaginable. John Mayer - Slow Dancing in a Burning Room? I can electric slide to that. Salt Shaker - Ying Yang Twins. I can electric slide to that. Dean Martin - On an Evening in Roma? I can electric slide to that. Okay, okay, you get the point.

The story behind the name

63 Moons is a tribute to my father, Eugene Willard Cowell (wow, he is probably pissed I just publicly shared his full name on the internet). My dad had a camera in his hand all the time taking photos of loved ones. He was either making people laugh or pissing them off, either way, he was quite the character and that guy that everyone loved. As you can see in the photo of him in the orange shirt he was not a fan of being in front of the camera. When he was 63 he lost his battle to cancer. My business is a tribute to him and his bright soul that will forever shine down on us, one moon for every year he was with us.

A few other pieces of me

Dustin & Dexter, no other way to describe this pair other than that they are obsessed with each other and I am obsessed with them. Dustin and I met on Bumble (shocker) and our first date was at a dive bar called The Aero Club. He didn’t know at the time but on our first date I made my friends secretly attend to make sure he didn’t kidnap me. The shining was playing on the tv at the bar and every Uber we took had either a ton of stuffed animals in the back window or plastic on the seats. Needless to say, this is the strange way we fell in love and I am forever grateful for that.

Let’s skip the part where we awkwardly hug and talk about what the weather is like outside and just be best friends.
